The craft that ties us to our land

From the alleyways of the Fès medina to your wardrobe, every Smaqi piece is the fruit of a craft passed down through generations. Our artisans sew by hand, weave with care, and embroider with soul.

We use carefully selected natural fabrics — silk, cotton and Moroccan wool — dyed in colours inspired by the medinas of Marrakech, Fès and Tetouan.

A piece never comes from a single gesture. The fabric is chosen, then cut flat and adjusted to measure when the order calls for it. Next comes the sfifa, the braided trim that borders the neckline and the sleeves, laid thread by thread; then the aakad, the buttons mounted one by one, whose number alone tells how much care went into the garment. The embroidery comes last, because it forgives nothing. Depending on how rich the model is, this work keeps one artisan busy from a few days to several weeks. It is that slowness, and not a machine, that makes no two of our pieces quite alike.

Behind every piece there are women. Our artisans learned this trade from their mother or their neighbour, in workshops where knowledge passes by showing rather than explaining, and where a seam is judged on the wrong side of the fabric as much as on the right. We insist that this work be recognised for what it is: a profession, not a pastime. That is also why we prefer to produce little and well, in short runs, even if it means a model disappears from the site for a few weeks. Embroidery done in a hurry always shows, and it shows first on the woman wearing it.

We dress women for every occasion. The caftan, long and straight, is worn on its own and suits an evening out as well as a family celebration. The takchita is made of two layers — the dfina laid over an inner dress — and remains the garment of the great days: weddings, engagements, ceremonies where one is looked at. The jellaba, simpler and hooded, belongs to everyday life and to Eid mornings. The jabador, a matching tunic and trousers, is worn to receive guests as easily as at home. The haïk, draped rather than cut, comes from the Tétouan region. But the heart of our work is made-to-measure: we take your measurements and build the piece for you, because a traditional garment that fits badly stops being traditional — it becomes a garment that hangs wrong.

What we sell online leaves from that same shop. An order placed on the site is prepared in Fès and delivered within 24 to 72 hours anywhere in Morocco; internationally, allow 5 to 14 days depending on the destination. Cash on delivery is accepted throughout the country: you pay once the order is in your hands. If a piece does not suit you, you have 7 days to return it.
