Caftan Fes — the single-piece robe, sewn by hand

The caftan is the centrepiece of the Moroccan wardrobe. In our atelier in Fes, every caftan is cut, embroidered and assembled by hand by artisans carrying on a craft passed from mother to daughter. Discover our Moroccan caftans for weddings, engagements, Eid and grand occasions.

Why a caftan from Fes?

Fes is the historic birthplace of the Moroccan caftan. It was here, in the workshops of the medina, that the codes were set: the straight cut, the randa embroidery and the sfifa buttons that fasten the front. A Fes caftan is recognisable by the fineness of its finishing — invisible seams, braid laid in silk thread, and the two-tone geometric motifs particular to the city. Buying a caftan in Fes means buying it at the source, with no middleman.

Our fabrics and embroidery

We work with silk satin, ceremonial velvet, embroidered muslin and brocade woven with gold and silver thread. Every caftan receives its braid and sfifa by hand: depending on how elaborate the model is, a piece takes anywhere from a few dozen to several hundred hours of work. Colours range from deep tones — burgundy, emerald, midnight blue — to the lighter shades favoured for summer weddings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a caftan and a takchita?

A caftan is a single-piece dress. A takchita is made of two layered dresses: an under-dress (tahtiya) and an over-dress (dfina), usually closed with an mdamma belt.

Do you make made-to-measure caftans in Fes?

Yes. We make caftans to measure in our Fes atelier. Contact us on WhatsApp at +212 611 937 371 with your measurements and the model you would like.

How do I care for an embroidered Moroccan caftan?

Dry clean only. Avoid ironing directly over gold embroidery, and store the caftan on a wide hanger away from light.

Can you rent a caftan instead of buying one?

Yes. Smaqi offers part of its caftans for rental, to be tried on in the Fès boutique. It is often the right call when the event is close or the outfit will only be worn once.

Do you ship caftans outside Morocco?

Yes, we ship to Europe, the Middle East and North America within 5 to 14 business days. Shipping costs depend on weight and destination.

Caftan or kaftan: which spelling?

Both name the same garment, قفطان. « Caftan » is the French spelling, « kaftan » the English one; you will also see « Moroccan kaftan » and « Moroccan caftan ». Either way it is the same long one-piece robe, sewn in Fès.

What is a dehbi caftan?

« Dehbi » comes from dheb, gold. It describes a caftan worked in gold thread: brocade, sfifa braid and gold-toned embroidery, worn above all for weddings and major ceremonies. It is the dressiest register of the Moroccan caftan, and it is made to measure.
